Consecutive Interpreting

Consecutive interpreting is oral translation after the spoken sentence. While the speaker is talking, the interpreter takes notes, then reproduces what the speaker has said for the audience. They often stand or sit close to the speaker, and use the microphone once the speaker has finished and it is their turn to speak.

Examples of Consecutive Interpreting Settings:

  • Conferences and Speeches
  • Foreign Delegations and Tours
  • Social Services (Home Visits, Community Outreach)
  • Educational Settings (Parent-Teacher Conferences, IEP Meetings)
  • Legal Meetings (Attorney-Client Depositions, Immigration, Diplomacy)
  • Workplace Meetings (HR or Training Sessions)
  • Medical Interpreting (Doctor Appointments or Consults, Procedures, Physical Therapy)
  • International Business Meetings
  • Religious Services
  • Private Events (Weddings)

Simultaneous Interpreting

Simultaneous interpreting is oral translation parallel with the spoken sentence. The interpreter reproduces what the speaker says while the speaker is still talking, with no delay. In this setting, the interpreter and participants wear headsets.
